Chinandega
Department, which more commonly means the Provience of Chinandega, is located
in the northwestern region of Nicaragua. It’s an industrial and trade center
in a rich agricultural region. The principal city is also named Chinandega
( Population 1985 estimate 67,800) and is connected by rail with the port
of Corinto to the southwest. The chief industries are saw milling, metalworking,
tanning, and the processing of rice, coffee, sugar, furniture, pottery,
perfume/toilet water, alcohol, and cheese are also made there.
Chinandega Department shares the Gulf of Fonseca with Honduras and
El Salvador. The “Volcán Cosigüina” ( 807 meters high) is an
impressive and beautiful volcano. If you are a hiker and decide to take
on its slopes, you will find a beautiful lake to swim in at the top. You
can hire a guide at “Potosí” to take you there.
The Spanish colonial port of El Realejo (1534) is nearby. |
